While Capitola is better known for its saltwater fishing, venturing inland to nearby freshwater lakes and reservoirs can offer surprisingly good crappie fishing. Focus on locations like Loch Lomond Recreation Area or smaller, less-pressured lakes in the Santa Cruz Mountains. These spots offer the kind of structure crappie love – submerged trees, docks, and weed beds. Spring is prime time, as crappie move into shallower water to spawn. Early morning and late afternoon are usually the most productive. A small boat or kayak is useful for accessing the best spots, but bank fishing is also possible in some areas. Try using live minnows or small jigs under a bobber, adjusting the depth until you find where the fish are holding. Be aware that some of these lakes may have specific regulations regarding boat types or fishing licenses, so check local rules before you go.
