Santa Clarita offers some decent crappie fishing opportunities, particularly at Castaic Lake. While Castaic is better known for its bass, the lake also holds a population of crappie that can provide some fun action. Look for crappie around submerged trees, docks, and brush piles, especially in the coves and shallower areas of the lake. Spring is the prime time to target spawning crappie, but they can also be caught throughout the year. Small jigs and minnows fished under a bobber are the most effective techniques. A local tip is to fish near the boat docks and marina areas, as these structures often attract crappie. Also, be aware of the depth, as crappie tend to suspend at different levels depending on the time of day and water temperature. While not a crappie mecca, Castaic Lake offers a chance to catch some decent-sized crappie while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
