Crappie

If you're looking for some slab-sided crappie action in northern Illinois, Antioch is a great place to start. The Chain O'Lakes region, easily accessible from Antioch, is a complex of interconnected lakes and channels teeming with crappie. Spring is prime time, as crappie move into shallow bays and channels to spawn. Look for them around submerged timber, docks, and weed beds. A small jig tipped with a minnow or plastic grub under a bobber is a classic and effective presentation. Fall can also be productive as crappie school up before winter. Local tip: Check water clarity, as crappie prefer slightly stained water. The Fox River can be a good option if the lakes are too clear. Be aware that boat traffic can be heavy on weekends, so consider fishing during the week for a more peaceful experience. The Chain offers plenty of shoreline access, but a boat will allow you to explore more of the system and find those hidden honey holes.
