Crappie

If you're looking for slab-sized crappie near Phoenix, Illinois, the Little Calumet River and its backwater areas offer some surprisingly good opportunities. While it's not known as a crappie mecca, the slower-moving sections and connected ponds hold decent populations, especially around submerged timber and bridge pilings. Spring is prime time, as the crappie move into the shallows to spawn. Focus your efforts in April and May, and again in the fall (October/November) as water temperatures cool. A local tip: access to some of the best areas requires a small boat or kayak, so plan accordingly. The water can be murky, so use brighter colored jigs or minnows to attract attention. Also, be aware of the current, especially after heavy rains, which can affect water clarity and crappie location. The crappie here tend to be a bit smaller on average compared to larger reservoirs, but the chance of hooking into a real 'keeper' is definitely there. Don't overlook the shaded areas during the heat of the day, as crappie will often seek refuge there.
