Crappie

Crappie fishing around Wichita can be quite rewarding, especially in the spring. Cheney Reservoir is a popular and productive spot. Target submerged timber, brush piles, and bridge pilings with jigs or minnows suspended under a bobber. The crappie tend to move shallow to spawn in the spring, so focus on areas with 5-10 feet of water. El Dorado Lake, a bit further east, is another good option. Look for crappie around the numerous fish attractors that have been placed in the lake. Public access is available at both lakes, but be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends during the spawn. Wichita crappie aren't generally huge, but you can find some quality fish with persistence. Remember to check creel limits before you head out.
