Crappie

Columbia, Louisiana offers some fantastic crappie fishing in the Ouachita River and its associated backwaters. These panfish are a favorite among locals, and for good reason – they're plentiful and delicious. The best time to target crappie here is during the spring spawn (March-April) when they move into shallow water to reproduce. Look for them around cypress trees, brush piles, and submerged timber in the sloughs and oxbow lakes off the main river channel. Jigs and minnows are the go-to baits, fished under a cork or on a tight line. The backwaters near Duty Ferry are known crappie hotspots. A local tip: pay attention to water temperature. When the water hits the mid-60s, the spawn is on. Also, be respectful of private property along the shoreline; many areas are accessible only by boat.
