Crappie

Carlton, Minnesota, offers a classic Northwoods crappie fishing experience. This region is dotted with numerous lakes and flowages that hold healthy populations of black crappie. The St. Louis River and its associated backwaters are particularly productive. Spring is prime time, as crappie move into shallow bays and near shoreline structure to spawn. Look for areas with submerged wood, lily pads, and reeds. Small jigs tipped with minnows or waxworms are highly effective. As the water warms in the summer, crappie tend to move deeper, often suspending near submerged timber. Use your electronics to locate these schools and try vertical jigging. A local tip: many of the smaller lakes around Carlton have limited public access, so be sure to research access points beforehand or consider using a canoe or kayak to reach more remote areas. Don't overlook the fall either, as crappie often feed heavily before winter, providing excellent fishing opportunities.
