Crappie

If panfish are your passion, Crosslake offers some fantastic crappie action. The Whitefish Chain of Lakes is the heart of it, with interconnected lakes providing diverse habitat. Target areas with submerged wood, like fallen trees or brush piles, especially in early spring as the crappies move shallow to spawn. The bite really picks up in May and June as the water warms, then again in the fall as they fatten up for winter. A small jig tipped with a crappie minnow or plastic grub is tough to beat. Access to the Whitefish Chain is excellent, with numerous public boat ramps and resorts. Be aware that boat traffic can be heavy during peak summer months, so early mornings or weekdays are your best bet for a quieter experience. Look for stained water, as crappies often prefer it, and don't be afraid to move around to find where the schools are holding.
