Crappie

If you're chasing crappie in the Iron Junction area, you're in for a treat. This region of Minnesota is dotted with smaller lakes and flowages that offer excellent crappie fishing, often overlooked compared to the larger, more famous waters. Focus your efforts on lakes with plenty of structure, like submerged timber or weed beds – crappies love to congregate around these areas, especially during the spawn. Spring is prime time, as the crappies move into the shallows to spawn, making them easier to target. However, don't overlook the fall, as they fatten up before winter. For access, check out the public access points on some of the smaller lakes accessible off County Road 10 – these often provide good access without heavy boat traffic. A local tip: crappies here can be quite finicky, so experiment with different jig colors and presentations to find what they're biting on that day. The crappies in these smaller lakes can be surprisingly large, so be prepared for a good fight!
