Crappie

If you're looking for slab crappies in Central Minnesota, Sobieski offers some excellent opportunities, particularly in the smaller lakes and connected waterways dotting the landscape. These lakes, often overlooked, hold surprisingly large crappie populations. Spring is prime time, right after ice-out when the crappies move into the shallows to spawn. Focus on areas with submerged timber, reeds, and lily pads – they provide cover and attract baitfish. Another excellent time is late fall, as the fish fatten up before winter. A local tip: Many anglers find success using small jigs tipped with minnows or wax worms under a bobber. Access can be a bit tricky on some of the smaller lakes; be sure to check for public access points and respect private property. The crappies here aren't pressured as heavily as in larger, more well-known lakes, so you have a good chance of finding some real keepers.
