Looking to hook some slab-sided crappie in central Nebraska? Dannebrog offers some surprisingly good opportunities. The area's numerous small lakes, ponds, and especially Sherman Reservoir, just northwest of town, are prime crappie habitat. Sherman Reservoir, with its flooded timber and varying depths, is a crappie haven. Spring is undoubtedly the best time, as crappie move into the shallows to spawn. Look for them near submerged brush and weed beds in coves. A small jig tipped with a minnow or a tube bait worked slowly under a bobber is a classic and effective technique. Fall can also be productive as the water cools and crappie school up again before winter. Tip: Sherman Reservoir can get windy, so check the forecast before you go and consider fishing protected areas on windy days. The south side of the lake offers more protection from northerly winds. Also, be aware of fluctuating water levels, especially during irrigation season, which can impact crappie location.
