If you're after crappie near Pemberton, NJ, the numerous ponds and lakes of the Pinelands offer ample opportunities. Mirror Lake and Pakim Pond are two local favorites known for their healthy crappie populations. These bodies of water feature shallow, weedy areas and submerged structure that crappie love. Spring, during the pre-spawn and spawn, is the absolute best time to target them, but fall can also be productive. Small jigs and minnows suspended under a bobber are classic crappie tactics that work well here. A local tip: pay close attention to water temperature in the spring, as crappie will move into the shallows when the water reaches the right temperature. Be mindful of boat launch regulations and access fees at some of these lakes. The crappie in the Pinelands tend to be good sized, with some reaching well over a pound.
