Elephant Butte Lake is a crappie angler's paradise in southern New Mexico, thanks to its vast submerged structure and fluctuating water levels that create ideal spawning habitat. Spring is undoubtedly the prime time, with pre-spawn crappie staging in the flooded timber and brush near the Rio Grande and the lake's southern coves. As the water warms, move shallower, focusing on submerged trees and brush in the 8-15 foot range. Many anglers find success spider-rigging minnows or jigs around these structures. For those without a boat, the shoreline near the dam and the state park offers decent access, especially during the spawn when crappie move close to shore. Remember that water levels can fluctuate significantly, so check the lake's current level before heading out to adjust your approach. A fish finder is invaluable for locating submerged structure and schools of crappie. The crappie here tend to be good size, often exceeding 12 inches, making for a rewarding trip.
