If you're looking for slab-sized crappie in eastern North Carolina, Grifton is a great place to start. The expansive tidal waters of the Contentnea Creek and nearby Neuse River offer prime crappie habitat, especially around submerged structure and cypress trees. Spring is undoubtedly the best time to target them, as they move into the shallows to spawn. Look for them in the backs of creeks and near any woody cover. A small jig or minnow fished under a bobber is a classic and effective presentation. In the fall, crappie will school up in deeper holes and near creek mouths as they prepare for winter. A fish finder can be invaluable for locating these schools. Be aware that the water can be heavily stained, so brighter colored lures often produce better results. Public access is available at the Grifton Riverfront Park, providing easy launching for small boats and kayaks. Remember to check the tide charts, as the current can be strong, especially in the main channel.
