Crappie

If you're looking for some slab-sized crappie in southeastern North Carolina, Varnamtown offers some excellent freshwater opportunities. The many creeks and tributaries feeding into the Shallotte River provide ideal habitat. These brackish waters offer deep pockets and plenty of submerged structure where crappie congregate, especially during the cooler months. Spring and fall are prime times, as the crappie move into shallower water to spawn or feed before winter. Focus your efforts around docks, submerged timber, and creek mouths. A light-action rod with 4-6 lb test line is perfect for presenting small jigs or minnows under a bobber. For bank access, try the areas around the Shallotte River Swamp Park. Boat access is available at several public ramps along the Shallotte River. Be mindful of the tides, as they can influence crappie behavior and location. Also, the water can be murky at times, so brighter colored jigs can be beneficial.
