Flathead Catfish

While Prescott isn't necessarily known as a flathead catfish hotspot, there are opportunities to tangle with these whiskered giants if you know where to look. Your best bet is likely Lynx Lake. Although primarily known for trout and other panfish, Lynx Lake does hold a population of flatheads, albeit a less dense one compared to larger river systems. Targeting them requires patience and a different approach than you might use for bass or trout. The warmer months, particularly late spring and summer, are when flatheads are most active. Fish the deeper holes and channels near submerged timber or rocky structure with live bait like bluegill or goldfish. A heavy rod and reel are a must, as these fish can put up a serious fight. Be prepared for a long night, as flatheads are primarily nocturnal feeders. Access to Lynx Lake is readily available with a boat ramp and shoreline access points, but be mindful of recreational boaters during peak season.
