Flathead Catfish

East Dublin offers some excellent flathead catfish angling, primarily in the Oconee River. What sets this location apart is the relatively untouched nature of the river, allowing flatheads to grow to impressive sizes. Targeting these whiskered giants is best done during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. They become more active as the water heats up. Live bait is key; bream or bullheads are local favorites. Fish them on heavy tackle near submerged logs, deep holes, or along river bends. A good access point is the Buckeye Park boat ramp, providing easy access to the Oconee. Be prepared for a fight; flatheads in the Oconee are known for their strength. Many anglers have success fishing at night, as flatheads are primarily nocturnal predators. Keep in mind that the river can have strong currents, so use appropriate weights to keep your bait on the bottom.
