Flathead Catfish

If you're after a trophy flathead catfish, Hickory Flat, Mississippi, is a great place to start. Sardis Lake and the Tallahatchie River offer prime habitat for these whiskered giants. The lake, in particular, is known for producing some truly impressive flatheads. Target areas with submerged timber, creek channels, and deep holes near the old river run. The best time to target flatheads here is from late spring through early fall. They become more active as the water warms, and their pre-spawn and post-spawn feeding binges are legendary. Live bait is key – think large bluegill or bullheads. A stout rod and reel are a must, as these fish can pull hard. Be aware of the current in the Tallahatchie; anchoring can be tricky. Many anglers launch from the numerous ramps around Sardis Lake and fish the river where it enters the lake. Local tip: Night fishing during the summer months can be incredibly productive, as flatheads are primarily nocturnal hunters.
