Flathead Catfish

Bassett, Nebraska, though known for its Sandhills lakes, also offers opportunities for flathead catfish in the Niobrara River. While not as prolific as in larger rivers further east, the Niobrara does hold some impressive flatheads, especially in its deeper holes and near submerged woody structure. Summer is the prime time to target these nocturnal predators. Live bait, such as bluegill or bullheads, is the most effective approach. Fish these baits near the bottom in areas with current breaks or near logjams. Be prepared for a potentially long wait, as flathead fishing requires patience. Access to the river is available at several public access points, but be aware that the river can be challenging to navigate in some areas due to shallow water and sandbars. A sturdy rod and reel are essential, as flatheads can put up a tremendous fight. Check local regulations regarding baitfish restrictions before you go.
