Flathead Catfish

Flathead catfish are a hidden gem in the waters around Due West, South Carolina. While not as widely targeted as other species, they can be found in the larger rivers and reservoirs within a reasonable driving distance. The Savannah River, to the west, and the Saluda River, to the east, both hold populations of flatheads. Summer is the peak season for targeting these whiskered giants. They become more active in the warmer water, and their focus shifts to feeding heavily. Live bait, such as bream or shad, is the key to success. A practical tip: due to the size these fish can reach, heavy tackle is essential. Use a sturdy rod, reel, and line to handle the powerful runs of a big flathead. Bank fishing access can be found along certain sections of the rivers, but a boat provides the best opportunity to locate prime flathead habitat, such as submerged logs and deep holes. Expect to find fish in the 10-30 pound range, with the potential for much larger specimens.
