Flounder

Minnesott Beach is a fantastic launch point for flounder fishing in the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound. The area is known for both Southern Flounder and Summer Flounder, with the warmer months (late spring through early fall) being the most productive. These flatfish are masters of camouflage, so focus your efforts on areas with sandy or muddy bottoms near structure like docks, oyster beds, and grass edges. Drifting live bait, such as mud minnows or small shrimp, along the bottom is a proven technique. A local's trick: try using a Carolina rig with a short leader to keep your bait near the bottom while minimizing snags. Also, pay attention to the tides – flounder often move with the current to ambush prey. The flounder in this area can range in size, but many anglers successfully target 'doormats' (large flounder) exceeding 5 pounds. Be sure to check the current size and bag limits before you head out.
