Flounder

For flounder fanatics, Lake Jackson presents a great opportunity to target these flatfish. The key is to understand their ambush predator behavior. They love to lie in wait on muddy or sandy bottoms near structure. The fall months, particularly during the flounder run, are legendary. These fish migrate towards the Gulf to spawn, concentrating them in the bays and passes. Try drifting along the bottom with live mud minnows or small mullet, or gigging at night in the shallows. A good place to start is the Intracoastal Waterway or the flats around Bastrop Bay. A local tip: pay attention to the wind direction. A steady wind can create muddy water, which flounder avoid. Look for areas where the water is relatively clear, even if it's just a small pocket. Remember to use a slow, deliberate presentation, as flounder can be easily spooked.
