Gulf Sturgeon
St. Augustine offers a unique opportunity to target Gulf Sturgeon in its freshwater rivers. The St. Johns River and its tributaries hold a significant population of these ancient fish. Unlike many other sturgeon fisheries, the St. Johns River system provides year-round habitat. However, the best time to target them is generally during the cooler months (October-April) when they are more active. Targeting these fish requires patience and specialized tackle. A sturdy rod and reel capable of handling heavy weights and strong currents is essential. The most common technique is bottom fishing with cut bait such as shad or eel. The area around the Shands Bridge is a known sturgeon hotspot, but be aware of boat traffic. Because sturgeon are a protected species, familiarize yourself with all regulations regarding catch and release before fishing. A Florida freshwater fishing license is required.
