Targeting halibut out of Clallam Bay offers a unique Pacific Northwest fishing experience. This area is known for its relatively calmer waters compared to more exposed ocean areas, making it accessible to a wider range of boats. The best time to chase these flatties is typically from late spring through early fall, aligning with halibut season openings and their migration patterns following baitfish. Focus your efforts on areas with structure, such as underwater pinnacles and drop-offs, which tend to hold more bait and, subsequently, halibut. Locally, the area around Sekiu, just east of Clallam Bay, is a popular starting point. Be aware that tides and currents can be strong here, so always check the marine forecast. Also, natural presentations like herring or salmon bellies are often the most effective, but don't hesitate to experiment with different jig weights and colors to find what the halibut are keying on.
