Hybrid Striped Bass

Queen Anne, Maryland, offers some fantastic freshwater hybrid striped bass action. While not as widespread as largemouth bass, the hybrid striped bass, or 'wipers,' provide a thrilling fight. Look to Tuckahoe Lake and the Tuckahoe River for your best chances. These fish are stocked periodically, so their population can vary, but when they're biting, it's usually fast and furious. Spring and fall are the optimal times to target them, as they become more active with the cooler water temperatures. They often school together, so if you catch one, there are likely more nearby. A helpful local tip is to use live bait, such as alewives or shad, if available. Otherwise, try casting crankbaits, swimbaits, or bucktails. The Tuckahoe State Park is a great access point for both bank fishing and launching a boat. Be aware of any size or creel limits for hybrid striped bass, as regulations can change. These fish are known for their powerful runs, so make sure your tackle is up to the challenge.
