Hybrid Striped Bass

If you're looking for some hard-fighting Hybrid Striped Bass in southeastern New Mexico, Tatum offers a few under-the-radar freshwater opportunities. These fish aren't native, but they are stocked in select reservoirs and lakes in the region, offering a great chance to tangle with a powerful fish. The best time to target Hybrids near Tatum is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are moderate and the fish are actively feeding. Look for areas with submerged structure or points where the wind is blowing into the shoreline. Hybrids often school, so if you catch one, stick around – there are likely more. A local tip: check water levels before you head out, as some of the smaller lakes can fluctuate significantly depending on rainfall. Also, be prepared for windy conditions, which are common in this part of the state. When the wind picks up, focus on the windward side of the lake, as this is where the baitfish (and the Hybrids) will congregate.
