Hybrid Striped Bass

While Choctaw itself doesn't have a renowned hybrid striped bass fishery, nearby Lake Thunderbird, easily accessible from Choctaw, is the place to go for these hard-fighting fish. Hybrids are stocked in Thunderbird, creating a popular recreational fishery. Spring and fall are the peak seasons when the water temperatures are moderate. Look for schools of hybrids chasing shad on the surface, particularly in the early morning or late evening. Topwater lures, crankbaits, and swimbaits are effective for these surface feeding frenzies. Trolling is also a common tactic, especially during the warmer months when hybrids move deeper. Access to Lake Thunderbird is available via multiple boat ramps and shore fishing areas. A local tip: watch for flocks of birds diving on baitfish, as this often indicates the presence of feeding hybrids below. Be prepared for a strong fight – hybrids are known for their powerful runs.
