Targeting king mackerel out of Bay Head means heading offshore into the Atlantic. This isn't a near-shore fishery; you'll need a seaworthy vessel capable of handling potentially rough conditions. The best time to pursue kings here is during the warmer months, generally from late July through September, when they migrate north along the coast. Look for temperature breaks and areas with abundant baitfish, as kings are voracious predators. Trolling with live bait, such as bluefish or bunker, is a highly effective method. Be prepared to use wire leaders, as their razor-sharp teeth can easily slice through monofilament. A valuable local tip is to monitor VHF radio channels for reports from other anglers regarding king mackerel activity and locations. The Axel Carlson Reef is a popular spot to start your search. Also, be aware of potential strong currents and changing weather patterns common in this area.
