Del Rey Oaks, though small, provides access to some decent largemouth bass fishing in the Monterey Peninsula region. While you won't find massive lakes within the city limits, nearby Laguna Seca Recreation Area and Lake El Estero (in Monterey) offer opportunities. Laguna Seca, though known for its raceway, also holds a small, fishable lake. Focus on the weed edges and submerged structure with Texas-rigged worms or crankbaits. Lake El Estero, closer to the coast, is a small urban lake with surprisingly good bass fishing. Fish around the tules and under the bridges with topwater lures early in the morning or late in the evening. Spring and early summer are generally the best times, as the bass are spawning and actively feeding. Remember that these are smaller bodies of water, so pressure can be high. Practice catch and release to help maintain the fishery. A California fishing license is required.
