Largemouth Bass
While Pagosa Springs isn't nationally known for Largemouth Bass, you can find some surprisingly good fishing in the region's smaller lakes and reservoirs. Navajo Lake, a short drive into New Mexico, is probably your best bet for consistently finding bass. Closer to town, Williams Creek Reservoir and Echo Canyon Reservoir can also hold bass, though they're less consistent. Target these lakes from late spring through early fall, when the water temperatures are warmer. Bass will be holding in shallower water near vegetation and structure during the spawn (late spring/early summer) and then moving deeper as the summer progresses. Local tip: Powerbait or live worms fished near submerged timber in Navajo Lake can be deadly. Be aware that Echo Canyon Reservoir can experience significant drawdown later in the summer, impacting fish habitat and access. Check lake levels before you go. The bass here aren't giants, but a few chunky 3-5 pounders are definitely possible.
