Largemouth Bass

Coal City, Illinois, while known for its industrial landscape, surprisingly holds some decent largemouth bass fishing opportunities in the surrounding waterways. The Mazon River and its associated creeks and ponds offer classic bass habitat. Look for largemouth in weedy areas, near fallen timber, and around any structure that provides cover. Spring is undoubtedly the best time to target largemouth here, as they move shallow to spawn. However, the fall can also be productive as they fatten up for the winter. A canoe or kayak is ideal for navigating the smaller waterways. Be aware of private property along the riverbanks and obtain permission before accessing the water. Local anglers often have success with plastic worms and topwater lures in the early morning or late evening. The largemouth here tend to run smaller on average, but persistence can reward you with a memorable catch.
