Largemouth Bass

For largemouth bass in the Galena area, focus your attention on the sloughs and backwaters connected to the Galena River (also known as the Fever River). These quieter waters offer ideal habitat for largemouth, with plenty of vegetation, fallen timber, and submerged structure. Spring and early summer are prime times, as the bass move into the shallows to spawn. Target these spawning areas with soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and shallow-diving crankbaits. As the water warms in summer, shift your focus to deeper water near structure. A Texas-rigged worm or jig can be effective for probing these areas. Fall is another excellent time, as the bass feed aggressively before winter. A local tip: the Galena River can be prone to fluctuating water levels, especially after heavy rains. Check river conditions before heading out, and be prepared to adjust your tactics accordingly. Public access is available at several points along the river, but some areas may require a short hike to reach the best fishing spots. The bass in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different lures and presentations to find what they're biting on.
