Largemouth Bass

Targeting largemouth bass near Highland Park means focusing on the area's inland lakes and ponds, as well as the sloughs and backwaters connected to the Des Plaines River. While Lake Michigan is close, it's less productive for largemouth. The best time to fish is during the pre-spawn (late spring) and fall feeding frenzies. Look for shallow, weedy areas where bass ambush prey. In summer, target deeper, cooler water near structure. A practical tip: many smaller ponds are accessible from local parks; research park district maps for access points and permit requirements. The bass in these smaller waters can be surprisingly large, but they're often pressured, so finesse tactics and natural-looking presentations often outperform power fishing. Also, be mindful of the Des Plaines River's water levels; heavy rains can make fishing challenging.
