Largemouth Bass

Leonore, Illinois, while a small town, offers some decent largemouth bass fishing, primarily in local ponds and smaller lakes in the surrounding countryside. These waters, often overlooked, can hold some surprisingly good-sized bass. The best time to target largemouth here is during the spring spawning season (late April-May) when the fish are in shallow water, actively guarding nests. Topwater lures like frogs and buzzbaits can be incredibly effective during this period, especially early in the morning or late in the evening. Another productive time is the fall, as bass feed aggressively before winter. A key piece of advice: try fishing around any submerged vegetation or fallen trees you can find. These provide excellent cover for bass to ambush prey. Remember that many of these ponds are privately owned, so always obtain permission before fishing. The bass population in these smaller waters tends to be self-sustaining, resulting in fish that are often less pressured than in larger, more popular lakes.
