If you're looking for Largemouth Bass in northern Illinois, the Pecatonica River and its surrounding backwaters offer some surprisingly good fishing. While not known as a trophy bass destination, the Pecatonica holds a healthy population of bass in the 1-3 pound range, with larger fish always a possibility. Focus on areas with submerged timber, weed edges, and rocky outcroppings. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass are actively feeding before and after the summer heat. A local tip: the stretch of river near the bridge on Route 75 provides good access and plenty of structure. Also, be aware that the river can fluctuate significantly after heavy rains, impacting water clarity and fishing conditions. The bass here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures like crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics can be effective.
