Largemouth Bass

Riverdale, Illinois, while close to the urban center of Chicago, still offers some decent largemouth bass fishing. The Little Calumet River and its associated waterways are your best bet. While not known for trophy-sized bass, the Little Calumet offers a surprising number of fish, making it a good spot for a quick trip. Summer and early fall are generally the most productive times, as the bass are actively feeding. Look for areas with good cover, such as docks, fallen trees, and weed beds. Plastic worms and crankbaits are popular choices. A local tip: try fishing the areas near the numerous bridges and culverts along the Little Calumet. These structures often hold bass seeking shade and ambush points. Public access can be limited in some areas, so be sure to check local regulations and respect private property. The bass population here consists mainly of smaller, but scrappy fish, so adjust your expectations accordingly.
