Largemouth Bass

Sammons Point, Illinois, offers some excellent freshwater largemouth bass fishing, primarily in the smaller lakes and ponds dotting the surrounding landscape. These bodies of water, often overlooked, can hold some surprisingly hefty bass. The best time to target largemouth here is during the spring spawning season (late April to early June) and again in the fall as the water cools. During the spawn, focus on shallow, protected areas with visible beds. In the fall, largemouth will be actively feeding before winter, so crankbaits and spinnerbaits worked along weed lines and drop-offs can be very effective. Many of these areas are accessible from the bank, but a small boat or kayak can greatly expand your fishing options. Remember to check local regulations regarding size and creel limits, as well as any restrictions on boat motor size. Local anglers often have success with Texas-rigged worms and jigs flipped into heavy cover.
