Largemouth Bass

South Chicago Heights might not be the first place that comes to mind for trophy bass, but the local ponds and lagoons tucked within the Cook County Forest Preserves offer surprisingly good largemouth fishing. These smaller, often overlooked waters can hold some real lunkers, particularly those connected to the Cal-Sag Channel. Spring is prime time, as bass move shallow to spawn. Focus on areas with emergent vegetation or submerged timber. Fall can also be productive as bass feed heavily before winter. A local tip: many of these ponds are accessible only by foot, so pack light and be prepared for a bit of a hike. Also, pay attention to water clarity – these smaller bodies of water can get murky quickly after rain, impacting lure presentation. The bass here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lure types and retrieve speeds.
