Largemouth Bass

Central Illinois, around Tonica, offers some excellent largemouth bass fishing, particularly in the smaller lakes, ponds, and backwaters connected to the Illinois River. While the main river channel holds some bass, the more productive spots are often the quieter, shallower areas. Spring is prime time, as bass move into spawning areas in the shallows. Look for weed beds, fallen timber, and any kind of structure that provides cover. Fall can also be very good as the bass feed heavily before winter. A local tip: many of the smaller lakes are accessible via county roads, but be respectful of private property. Also, water levels in the Illinois River fluctuate, so check conditions before heading out. Local bass tend to be relatively chunky due to the rich forage base, so don't be afraid to upsize your lures.
