Largemouth Bass

Coburg, Iowa, while a small town, offers some decent largemouth bass fishing in the surrounding ponds and smaller lakes. While there aren't any major reservoirs immediately adjacent, explore the smaller bodies of water in the area. Spring, particularly during the pre-spawn and spawn periods (late April to early June), is the best time to target largemouth. Focus on shallow weedy areas and submerged structure. A great tactic is to use weedless lures like Texas-rigged worms or topwater frogs around the thick vegetation. Later in the summer, try deeper crankbaits and Carolina rigs near drop-offs. Local tip: Inquire at the Coburg General Store about access to local farm ponds; many landowners grant permission to anglers who ask politely. Largemouth in these smaller waters often aren't huge, but you can find good numbers of 1-3 pound fish, and the occasional 5-pounder.
