Largemouth Bass

Choudrant offers some excellent bass fishing opportunities if you know where to look. The area's numerous small lakes and ponds, often privately owned but sometimes accessible with permission, hold good populations of largemouth. Lake D'Arbonne, a short drive north, is the major draw, offering a classic Louisiana bass fishery. Focus on the cypress tree edges and submerged structure with Texas-rigged worms or crankbaits. Spring and fall are peak seasons, as the bass are most active during these periods. During the summer, fish early and late in the day to avoid the heat and find more active fish. A local tip: many anglers have success flipping jigs around the docks and piers on D'Arbonne. The bass in this region tend to be aggressive, and while trophy fish are possible, the average size is a respectable 2-4 pounds. Remember to check the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries regulations before heading out.
