Largemouth Bass

If you're targeting largemouth bass in the Fenton, Louisiana area, you're in for some classic bayou fishing. The maze of canals, sloughs, and backwaters connected to the Calcasieu River provide excellent habitat. Spring is prime time, as the bass move shallow to spawn, and the post-spawn feeding frenzy can be epic. Fall is another great window, as bass fatten up before winter. Focus your efforts on areas with heavy cover like lily pads, cypress trees, and submerged vegetation. A good starting point is the public boat ramp at the end of Parish Road 375 off of Highway 165, which provides access to the Calcasieu River. Local tip: Pay close attention to water clarity; after heavy rains, the water can become muddy, pushing the bass into clearer pockets. The largemouth here tend to be aggressive, readily hitting spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and soft plastics, but don't be afraid to slow down with a Texas-rigged worm in the thickest cover.
