Largemouth Bass

Central Maine, and Auburn in particular, offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing. The Androscoggin River and its connected lakes and ponds hold healthy populations of bass, often overlooked in favor of the region's trout and salmon fisheries. The best time to target largemouth here is from late spring through early fall, when the water temperatures are warmer and the bass are actively feeding. Try exploring Lake Auburn, a primary water source for the city, but note that special regulations may apply. The Androscoggin River itself can also be productive, especially around structure like fallen trees, docks, and rocky outcroppings. A local tip: focus on areas with weed growth, as these provide cover and attract baitfish. Soft plastics like worms and creature baits, as well as topwater lures, can be effective. Be mindful of the river's current when fishing the Androscoggin, and adjust your presentation accordingly. Bass in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different retrieves to find what works best.
