Northampton, Massachusetts, nestled in the Connecticut River Valley, offers excellent largemouth bass fishing in a variety of freshwater habitats. The Connecticut River itself holds a healthy population, but the smaller oxbow lakes and ponds scattered throughout the area are often more productive. Look to the Oxbow (also known as the Connecticut River Oxbow) for classic bass structure. Spring spawning season is an exciting time, with bass guarding nests in the shallows. Summer provides opportunities to fish weed lines and lily pads. A local tip: Focus on the transition areas where the river flows into and out of these oxbows, as they concentrate baitfish and bass. Also, be aware of fluctuating water levels in the Connecticut River, especially after heavy rains. The bass population in this region is robust, and you can find some surprisingly large fish. Consider using topwater lures early and late in the day, or flipping jigs into heavy cover during the warmer hours.
