Funkley, Minnesota, though small, provides access to a number of smaller lakes and ponds that can offer surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing. The key here is to focus on the smaller, less pressured waters that often get overlooked. Spring is prime time, as the bass move shallow to spawn. Target areas with lily pads, reeds, and fallen timber. Topwater frogs and buzzbaits can be incredibly effective in these weedy environments. As the water warms, switch to flipping and pitching soft plastics around heavy cover. During the fall, bass will often school up and can be caught on crankbaits and spinnerbaits. A local tip: many of these smaller lakes lack established boat ramps, so be prepared to launch from the shoreline or use a canoe or kayak. Also, be aware of private property boundaries and respect landowners' rights. The bass in these smaller lakes tend to be aggressive and relatively uneducated, making for some exciting fishing.
