Grand Marais isn't the first place that springs to mind for largemouth bass, but the warmer, shallower inland lakes tucked away just off the North Shore can hold some surprisingly good populations. These lakes, often stained with tannins from the surrounding forests, offer unique bass fishing opportunities. Look for lily pads, fallen timber, and submerged vegetation – these are prime ambush points for largemouth. The best time to target bass here is during the summer months, from late June through August, when the water temperatures are at their warmest. Focus on the afternoon hours when the sun has had a chance to heat the water. A local tip: many of these lakes require a short portage to access, so travel light and be prepared to carry your gear. Also, be mindful of the abundant beaver activity; they create excellent bass habitat but can also present navigational hazards. The bass in these lakes tend to be opportunistic feeders, so try a variety of lures, including weedless jigs, spinnerbaits, and topwater frogs.
