The area's numerous mine pit lakes, characterized by their deep, clear water and steep drop-offs, hold populations of bass that can be challenging but rewarding to catch. Summer is the peak season, especially during the early morning and late evening hours when bass are most active in the shallows. Target weed lines, submerged timber, and rocky points with crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics. The clear water demands a stealthy approach – use longer casts and lighter line. A local tip: many of the mine pit lakes have limited public access, so scouting for access points beforehand is crucial. Also, be prepared for drastic temperature changes, as the deep water can stay cold even during the summer months. The bass in these lakes tend to be slightly smaller on average compared to southern Minnesota, but the unique environment and challenging fishing make for a memorable experience.
