Largemouth Bass

Dumas, Mississippi, might be a small town, but it's situated in an area with some solid largemouth bass fishing potential. While there isn't a major lake right in Dumas, several smaller lakes and ponds in the surrounding Tippah County offer excellent bass fishing. Explore the public fishing lakes managed by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) for good access and maintained fisheries. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass are shallow and aggressive during the spawn and pre-winter feeding frenzy. During the summer, focus on deeper structure and early morning/late evening fishing. A local tip: many of these smaller lakes can be effectively fished from the bank or with a kayak, so you don't necessarily need a large boat. Try using weedless lures around vegetation, as these lakes often have heavy cover. The bass in these smaller waters can be sensitive to fishing pressure, so practice catch and release to help maintain the quality of the fishery.
