Largemouth Bass

Petal, Mississippi, provides a good starting point for exploring the bass fishing opportunities in the surrounding areas. While the town itself doesn't have a massive lake, the Leaf River and its associated creeks and backwaters offer a diverse range of habitat for largemouth. Lake Bogue Homa, a short drive away, is another popular destination. Spring is the prime time, as bass move shallow to spawn. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits worked along the edges of weed beds and submerged timber can be very effective. During the hotter summer months, focus on deeper structure with Texas-rigged worms or Carolina rigs. A local tip: the water in the Leaf River can be stained, especially after rainfall, so opt for lures with bright colors or those that create a lot of vibration. Several public access points are available along the Leaf River, but a small boat or kayak will greatly expand your fishing options. Largemouth in this region tend to be aggressive, so be prepared for some exciting topwater action early and late in the day.
