While Eagle Nest Lake is the big draw around Eagle Nest, NM, for many species, if you're specifically after largemouth bass, you'll need to look to smaller waters in the surrounding area. Eagle Nest Lake itself is a high-altitude lake, and conditions aren't always ideal for largemouth. Instead, focus on smaller, warmer ponds and reservoirs further down in elevation – some private or leased waters may offer better opportunities, so research access beforehand. Late spring and early summer are typically the best times, as the water warms up and the bass become more active. Look for shallow, weedy areas or submerged structure. A local tip is to use weedless lures, as many of these smaller waters have dense vegetation. Also, be prepared for variable weather conditions, as the altitude can cause rapid changes in temperature and wind. The largemouth bass in this region may not reach trophy sizes, but they can still provide a fun and challenging fishing experience.
